In 2004, a bold idea on dementia and depression prevention was discussed at the NUS Department of Psychological Medicine. With financial support from the late Mr Lee Soon Teck, Mr Henry Lim and Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho Temple, the study was launched in 2012 at the Training and Research Academy (TaRA), Jurong Point Mall.
A thousand seniors 60 years and older were assessed and those with high risk of dementia were invited for a non-drug interventional programme which included health education, tai chi exercise, music-reminiscence, art therapy, horticultural therapy and mindfulness practice. Outcome measures included neuropsychological tests, MRI brain scans and biological markers.
After 5 years, the cohort was re-assessed and the prevalence of dementia was 3% and depression 4.4%.
This research is of translational relevance and has been introduced to 15 centres in Singapore.
